LUCAS’ MITZVAH PROJECT

Lucas is taking on a meaningful task for his Mitzvah Project. He is volunteering and fundraising, as well as gathering supplies for In Jacob’s Shoes, which provides children in need with the opportunity to walk with pride. He's doing it with one particular goal in mind - to make an impact in his community by helping those that are less fortunate.

This remarkable foundation was formed in memory of Jacob S. Zweig and is a 501(c)(3) public charity. In Jacob’s Shoes provides shoes, socks, backpacks, school supplies and athletic gear to South Florida children in need.

Please help Lucas make a difference by either providing a financial contribution or shopping the wishlist for In Jacob’s Shoes via the attached links.

**Please note on all donations that your contribution is in honor of Lucas Katz’s Bar Mitzvah.**

  • New to the Synagogue? Here's Your Guide To Proper Etiquette

    TIME
As a courtesy both to our clergy and your fellow members, we ask for everyone to make every effort to arrive on time as services begin promptly at the designated time.

    ATTIRE
Shabbat is a sacred time. We give honor to the Sabbath when we enter the sanctuary with certain attire. Our community loves to come together in faith and friendship, and dressing appropriately for Shabbat worship is suggested. Shorts or jeans are not recommended, and women should exercise a level of modesty in their clothing. High hemlines, bare shoulders and low-cut clothing are not appropriate. However, a jacket, sweater or shawl could be used as a cover up. Pants are totally acceptable for women. While the above is a recommendation to bring honor to Shabbat and the community, no one will ever be turned away in their desire to worship with our congregation.

    FOOD & DRINK
Food, drink, and the chewing of gum are prohibited in the sanctuary. Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the building.

    DECORUM
Please help us to maintain the dignity of the service by turning off all cell phones and electronic devices, and not holding conversations during the service.

    TECHNOLOGY
On the sacred sabbath, we refrain from using electronic devices like cameras and phones. If you have one. kindly power it off before the service begins. During a Bar Mitzvah, we honor the religious significance and avoid applause. Instead, we show appreciation to speakers and chanters with smiles, praising them with "yasher koach" and joining in the joyful song of “siman tov u'mazel tov”.

    CEREMONY
The meaning of Bar Mitzvah is "son of the commandments". Becoming a Bar Mitzvah is a boy’s religious coming of age, representing a public as well as personal commitment to ethical and communal responsibility. We mark the occasion by giving the bar Mitzvah the honor of reading from the Torah before the community.

    THE TORAH
The Torah is the foundation of Judaism and our most sacred text. Each week. we read and study a section of the Torah. Lucas’ "parasha" (portion) is Re’eh (“See”), which is the forty-seventh weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. This parashat details a series of laws in advance of the Israelites’ entrance into the Land of Israel.

Physically, the Torah is a scroll upon which the Five Books of Moses are written by a scribe in the original Hebrew. The scroll is made of parchment, and the words must be accurate to the letter. A scribe may work on a Torah For a year or more. Because the Torah is so spiritually valuable, it is not touched by hands which have natural oils on them that could harm the parchment. Instead, rollers are used to position the scroll to the appropriate section, and a pointer or "yad" in Hebrew is used to follow the reading.

    TALLIT (or Tallis):
The Tallit is a prayer shawl. It covers the shoulders and has "titzit" (fringes with knots on each of its corners. There are 613 knots to remind us of the 613 commandments mitzvot in Hebrew given by Hashem (God) in the Torah.

Lucas will wear a Tallit for the first time gifted to him by his Grandparents, Barbara and Lawrence Katz.

    KIPPAH
The kippah or yarmulke, is a head covering which Jews customarily wear as a sign of reverence to God. The Katz family will be providing the kippahs for the morning of Lucas’ Bar Mitzvah. Woman do not customarily wear kippahs, but they may do so if they wish.
